Escape to the woods with North Star Club

About a year ago, Matt and I ventured to (you can read the post ), a woodland retreat in Yorkshire. It was one of our favourite staycations of all time so we were delighted to be invited back to stay in one of their brand new suites. All cabins are buried amongst the trees and they feel truly private as each is about 25 meters from its neighbour. With no TVs, wi-fi and barely any signal, North Star Club makes for an incredibly secluded experience, just one of the reasons we fell in love with it.

Our home for the weekend was Whitby, one of three new Hideaway Suites designed especially for couples. Because of such, the suite was smaller than the previous one we had in but as it was just the two of us anyway, this wasn’t a problem for us. If anything, it made things more intimate and cosy. Each suite has a theme and as you might be able to guess, Whitby was a nod to the fishing town and as such, our suite was styled nautically but in a subtle fashion that was far from overbearing as can often be the case. I’m talking recycled wood and rope detailing while still paying homage to North Star’s rustic style.

The suite was made up of three rooms, the largest of which housed the softest, comfiest kingside bed which I can’t lie, we spent a lot of time snoozing in. I loved that it faced towards the front doors so we could lay and watch the trees dance thanks to Storm Brian who was certainly making his presence felt that weekend. We lit the wood burner multiple times while we were there and you are left a plentiful supply of logs and firefighters to keep nice and toasty. There was no lovelier feeling than coming back after a walk through the woods to a warm and cosy suite. The bathroom was more than adequate for our needs with a large (copper!) shower. While I did enjoy having a bathtub when we stayed in the Amy Johnson suite, it wasn’t something that was essential to our stay or that I particularly missed.

A third and final room housed a sink and fridge. If you wanted to do any cooking, you’d need to head out to the veranda where a gas BBQ stood waiting for slabs of meat to begin sizzling. There were table and chairs for al fresco dining, more useful in the warmer weather I imagine, although it was lovely to sit with a mug of tea and bacon sandwiches as we did one morning.

Another (and there sure are plenty!) of North Star’s fantastic qualities is the Woodshed, a communal relaxing space decked in fairy lights and faux fur where you could grab a hot drink and piece of honesty cake. Guests are encouraged to leave their details in the honesty book. You can socialise with a board game by the fire or a sing-a-long with the guitar. Just outside the Woodshed is the canopied campfire, probably my favourite part of North Star. Whatever the weather, you could light a fire and take up a tree stump, spearing marshmallows for s’mores with chocolate biscuits as we did multiple times over the weekend. There’s something about such a special setting, right there under the stars, that inspires good moods and intimate conversations, whether you are a couple, family or group of friends.

If you read my previous post about North Star, you’ll already know just how much I love it and it’s truly one of those places I hope I get to return to again and again, even bringing my family along. In my opinion, it’s somewhere you can really relax and in a world as busy as we live in, we could all do with more of that. Sure, there are multiple other places you could visit but at North Star, you can be truly excluded from technology and enjoy the feeling of not having to worry about how your latest Instagram post is performing or what everyone else is doing better than you. North Star Club should be under the dictionary definitely of ‘hygge’ because at the very heart of the retreat is warmth, cosiness and intimacy. Not only that but a weekend here will do wonders for your self-care. If you ever find yourself burnt out and struggling, my prescription to you is to head to North Star Club and make straight for the campfire. It might not solve all your problems but it will certainly leave you rejuvenated and with a clear head.

Our stay at North Star Club was complimentary in return for this review. As always, views are 100% my own. You can read more on my disclaimer
